In June 2016, the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority launched SafeTrack, a program to rehabilitate the local rail system. As a result, the use of ride-hailing and ride-sharing programs has exploded due to increased frustration about long Metro wait times and construction.
According to a recent Washington Post article, Uber rides have increased by 25% since the Metro SafeTrack was introduced. In the same article, Lyft reported a 15% increase in rider demand since June. Along with the overall increase in ridership, both Uber and Lyft report an increase in ride-sharing, from 20% before June to 25% in August.
Traditional taxis are also widely used in the DC area, but the access of Uber and Lyft through smart phones makes these services less restrictive and safer than taxis. Some taxis still refuse to go to certain areas of the city, such as Southeast DC; with Uber or Lyft, a ride is guaranteed.
Travel from Downtown DC to Tysons Corner, a popular shopping mall, is approximately $20 via UberX. Travel to Dulles International Airport from Downtown DC is approximately $40.
While construction amps up on the public transportation, and buses become ever more crowded, Uber and Lyft offer a more personalized, private way to travel that can still fit in most budgets.
